Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish-English Medical Interpreting

The Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish-English Medical Interpreting trains, qualifies, and provides clinical experience in Spanish-English medical interpreting. Students will complete the Garcia-Shilling Language Proficiency Assessment for Medical Professional certification as part of the program and will be considered qualified bilingual medical Spanish-English translators upon completion.

  • Accurately represent the needs of Spanish-speaking patients to medical staff. 
  • Accurately translate doctor and nurse instructions to patients in Spanish. 

Admissions

All applicants must meet the general undergraduate admission requirements. The following degrees have additional secondary admission criteria:

In addition, advanced-mid proficiency must be attained before taking the medical interpreting courses. A minimum score of 80% on the Garcia Shilling Language Proficiency Assessment for Medical Professionals must be met before completing the internship course. Foundational coursework that can prepare a student for the proficiency test includes SPAN 1013, SPAN 1023, SPAN 2033, SPAN 2043.

To apply for a certificate program, students must complete an Undergraduate Certification Declaration form with their advisor and submit it to the Registrar's Office.
