Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS)
The Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS) is a voluntary, cooperative effort among 137 Texas community colleges and universities to facilitate the transfer of freshman and sophomore-level general academic coursework. The TCCNS will aid students, counselors, advisers, and transfer staff in determining course equivalency to higher education institutions.
When students transfer between two participating TCCNS institutions, a course taken at the sending institution transfers as the course carrying the TCCNS designation at the receiving institution.
The common course number has a standardized four-letter prefix followed by a four-digit number. The four-letter prefix identifies the subject area. For example, ENGL represents English courses, while COSC represents computer science courses. The four-digit number identifies specific courses within the subject area. TCCNS numbers appear following TWU course numbers when applicable in this catalog.
Each digit in the four-digit sequence gives additional information about the course. The first digit identifies the course as either freshman level (1) or sophomore level (2). The second digit identifies the number of semester credit hours students earn upon completing the course. Most often, this digit will be a 1, 2, 3, or 4. The final two digits serve to establish the sequence in which courses are generally taken. Thus, French I - FREN 1311 is taken before French II - FREN 1312.
The current crosswalk between the TWU course number and respective title, and the Texas Common Course Number and title is provided on TWU's Texas Common Course Numbering System website.
