Graduate Degrees Offered
The Master of Music degree allows qualified students to pursue advanced studies in music with an emphasis in music education, music pedagogy, or music performance. The degree offers students the opportunity to expand the depth and breadth of knowledge in their area of emphasis, develop research skills, and engage in career-related experiences. The Master of Music prepares students for professional careers as teachers and performers and serves as a foundation for pursuing doctoral studies in music.
The Master of Music degree with an emphasis in music education also offers an option leading to Texas music teacher certification. Additional information, including certification requirements, is available at the College of Professional Education.
The Master of Music Therapy Degree allows qualified students to pursue advanced studies in music therapy. The 36-hour degree dedicates 18 credit hours to graduate-level music therapy study and culminates with a thesis project. Students develop advanced skills in leadership, advocacy, administration, and clinical supervision.

Minors
Coursework equivalent to the undergraduate minor in music is required. Six additional graduate semester credit hours of music must be selected in conference with the major and minor advisors.

MU 5113. Advanced Applications of Integral Thinking in Music Therapy. Interpretation of the music therapy process using integral thinking as a meta-theory. Strategies for integral thinking in music therapy including the deconstruction of biases. Creation of clinical documentation founded in integral thinking. Three lecture hours a week. MU 5123. Clinical Applications of Research in Music Therapy. Relationship between research and clinical practice. Research paradigms and corresponding designs with focus on activism and ethical and integral thinking in research. Development of research proposals and implementation of research findings. MU 5133. History of Music Technology. Influential individuals, instruments, and equipment related to music technology; key historical events; and development of electronic-based genres. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
MU 5201. Practicum in Music Therapy. In-depth clinical music therapy practice under the supervision of a board-certified music therapist. Completion of 34 clock hours of clinical experience. Prerequisites: permission of instructor. Three practicum hours a week. Credit: One hour.
MU 5221. Music Pedagogy Practicum. Professionally supervised teaching experience in an approved music studio, school, or private setting. Fifteen hours of applied teaching experience. MU 5453. Women in Music. Examination of the lives and works of groundbreaking women composers and musicians ranging from the Middle Ages to the present within their social, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Three seminar hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
MU 5493. Advanced Clinical Supervision in Music Therapy. Models of music therapy supervision; application of Integral Thinking to supervision; dynamics of supervisory relationships and impact on supervision process; supervision of students versus supervision of staff; ethical dilemmas in supervision. MU 5511. Opera Ensemble. Advanced ensemble study in theatrical vocal performance emphasizing the preparation and presentation of staged scenes and complete roles from the standard repertory. Students develop refined vocal technique, stylistic interpretation, diction, and dramatic skills through rehearsal and performance. Instruction emphasizes musical accuracy, historical and stylistic awareness, collaborative professionalism, and disciplined rehearsal practices appropriate to graduate-level study. MU 5531. University Chorus. A choral ensemble designed to provide group singing/leadership opportunities for all graduate students. Open to all students regardless of major and/or musical background, without audition. May be repeated for credit. Two rehearsal hours a week. Credit: One hour.

MU 5553. Seminar in Music Literature I. A study of music literature emphasizing analytical, historical, and stylistic approaches to repertoire appropriate to the student's primary performance area. Instruction focuses on developing foundational research, listening, and score-study skills while engaging with representative works selected by the instructor according to disciplinary needs. Three seminar hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
MU 5563. Seminar in Music Literature II. This course emphasizes advanced study of music literature appropriate to the student's primary performance area. Students engage in deep analytical inquiry, comparative study, and applied research related to advanced repertoire selected by the instructor. Emphasis is placed on integrating scholarly findings into informed interpretive and performance perspectives. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

MU 5753. Music Pedagogy I. A systematic study of foundational pedagogical principles for teaching music in applied settings. Emphasis is placed on integrating anatomical, physiological, acoustical, and didactic literature into instructional practice; evaluating historical and contemporary teaching approaches through observation and reflective analysis; and formulating a research-informed personal teaching philosophy grounded in professional ethics and effective communication. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
MU 5763. Music Pedagogy II. Study in the application of pedagogical principles in applied music instruction. Focus includes the design and implementation of sequential lesson plans and curricula; diagnostic and evaluative teaching strategies supported by technology and evidence-based practice; and synthesis of pedagogical knowledge.
